CBD and arthritis in cats

Like us, cats sometimes suffer from arthritis. It may be surprising, but even young cats can be affected by this painful disease. arthritis, makes the cat's joint movements difficult because of the pain caused by this pathology, and can cause him to limp. Let's see together how to recognize the symptoms of osteoarthritis in our cat friends, and how the CBD can relieve them.CBD and Arthritis

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a pathology of the cartilage, which causes pain, sometimes severe, when the joints are mobilized. It can affect one or even several joints. Cartilage has 2 very important roles, it is an adaptable and very smooth tissue that will reduce friction between two bones of a joint, and also cushion the pressure that can be exerted on it. In cats, as in other animals, arthritis manifests itself by wear and tear of this cartilage. Generally, this wear and tear occurs slowly, and the cartilage gradually decreases in thickness. This reduction means that it is no longer an effective shock absorber, which will further increase its premature wear. Arthritis is classified in 2 categories:

  • Primary arthritis is normal wear and tear, which mainly affects older animals.
  • Secondary arthritis can occur when the cartilage of the joint has been damaged by injury or disease.

To know if your cat is suffering from an early stage of illness, you must observe its behaviour, which can be a good indicator. When one or more of his joints are in pain, the cat will often avoid running or jumping, he may also limp. In the same way, you can observe that at rest, he will refrain from resting on the joint that is bothering him. As the disease progresses, the joint may become blocked.

If you have any concerns, make an appointment with your veterinarian. He will perform a thorough examination of all the joints of your four-legged animal. His diagnosis will also be based on x-rays that may or may not confirm the veterinarian's assumptions.

Arthritis is a disease that unfortunately cannot be cured, but its symptoms can be reduced. The veterinarian may prescribe pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs. Even if pain is present, it will be necessary to maintain sufficient physical activity so that the animal does not lose its muscles. In the most disabling cases, surgery may be considered depending on the cat's state of health and the affected joint.

CBD and arthritis in cats

The CBD (cannabidiol) that we humans take is also indicated for cats, because they too have an endocannabinoid system just like us. CBD (cannabidiol) is a substance produced by industrial hemp (Cannabis Sativa) whose health benefits have been widely demonstrated in both humans and animals. CBD belongs to the family of cannabinoids, just like THC. THC is a psychotropic molecule that is widely found in Cannabis Indica. When talking about cannabis, it is important to understand that cannabis is actually a family of plants:

  • Cannabis Sativa (industrial hemp) rich in CBD, very poor in THC (less than 0,2 % according to the law).
  • Cannabis Indica, poor in CBD, and very rich in THC
  • Cannabis Ruderalis, low in CBD and THC

CBD, unlike THC, is not psychotropic, its marketing and consumption is legal.

  • According to several studies, the effect of CBD acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory. (MECHA et al. 2013, KOZELA et al. 2013, Li et al. 2013)
  • CBD strongly reduces pain, as many studies have shown. (Lu et al.2015, GENNARO et al. 2017)
