I. CBD, energy and vitality: the state of knowledge
A. CBD and the endocannabinoid system: what we know
The endocannabinoid system helps regulate many functions, including appetite, sleep and energy balance. CBD interacts with this system in a way that is still poorly understood; to date, no robust study shows that it increases energy or vitality.
B. Hemp-based products: what is permitted in France
Among the many hemp-based products on the market, not all are permitted in France, and none can claim to "boost" energy:
- Cannabidiol capsules: capsules and food supplements enriched with CBD are foodstuffs, illegal to sell in France; CBD is not authorized as a food in the EU (Novel Food Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, press release from the French Ministry of Agriculture of May 20, 2026).
- CBD oils: a CBD oil to be swallowed, or added to food and drinks, falls into these same unauthorized foodstuffs. Hemp seed oil, with no added CBD, on the other hand remains a permitted food.
- CBD gummies: these cannabidiol gummy candies are also foodstuffs, not authorized for sale in France, whatever their flavor.
II. CBD and sleep: what the studies say
A. Rest and recovery: mixed results
Studies, often on small samples, explore the links between CBD and sleep; their results are mixed and do not allow any conclusion. Conversely, drowsiness is one of the reported side effects: take care when driving. Sleep problems that persist warrant a doctor's opinion.
B. Consumer opinions on CBD and sleep
Many consumers say they sleep better since they started taking CBD. These testimonials remain individual impressions: they do not replace controlled studies, and the placebo effect can play a large part in them.

III. CBD, stress and anxiety: the state of research
A. Mechanisms still under study
Stress and anxiety are among the most studied subjects around CBD. Cannabidiol interacts with the endocannabinoid system and could influence signaling pathways such as that of serotonin; these mechanisms, observed mainly in animals, have yet to be confirmed in humans.
B. Studies and research on the effects of CBD
Many scientific studies have been carried out to assess the implications of CBD for stress and anxiety. The results, from studies that are often preclinical or on small samples, do not allow any conclusion. An anxiety disorder is a matter for a doctor: CBD does not replace any treatment and can interact with certain medicines.
C. The receptors of the endocannabinoid system and their role in managing anxiety
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is involved in regulating stress. The receptors that make it up, such as the CB1 and CB2 receptors, are involved in regulating the release of neurotransmitters linked to stress and anxiety. CBD interacts with this system in an indirect way that is still poorly understood.

IV. CBD products: what is permitted and the precautions
A. The information a compliant product must display
A CBD product sold in France must come from authorized hemp varieties and contain less than 0.3% THC. Its origin, its CBD and THC content and independent laboratory analyses make it possible to check this; no product, however, can promise an effect on energy or health.
B. The different ways of consuming CBD
As we have seen, CBD comes in different forms, whose status differs in France:
- Hemp flowers and leaves: their sale is permitted in France if they come from authorized varieties, with less than 0.3% THC (French Council of State (Conseil d'État), December 29, 2022, no. 444887). Non-enriched leaves can be used for herbal tea.
- Oils, capsules and gummies to be swallowed: these are CBD foodstuffs, not authorized for sale in France; it is best to steer clear of them.
- Hemp seed oils: with no added CBD, these are permitted foods, rich in fatty acids.
- Creams and balms: applied to the skin, these are cosmetics; they do not treat pain or inflammation.
C. What the law says about sale in France
In France, only products from authorized hemp varieties, with less than 0.3% THC, may be sold, in stores as well as online; CBD foodstuffs (oils to be swallowed, capsules, gummies) are excluded. No seller may present a CBD product as having an effect on health or energy: such a promise should be a warning sign.
D. Precautions for using CBD
CBD is not a medicine and no dose is recognized for an effect on energy. Side effects have been reported (drowsiness, digestive problems, raised liver enzymes at high doses) and CBD can interact with certain medicines (CYP450 enzymes). It is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and residual THC can cause a positive roadside drug test. If you are currently undergoing treatment, ask your doctor for advice.

Energy and vitality: sleep and lifestyle first
CBD attracts a great deal of interest around vitality, sleep and stress, but research does not, to date, allow any effect on energy or vitality to be attributed to it. Sleep, diet, physical activity and, in the event of lasting fatigue, a doctor's opinion remain the real levers.
If you are interested in CBD, find out what is permitted, check the THC content of products and talk to your doctor if you are undergoing treatment. You can also share your experience in the comments, bearing in mind that a personal impression is no substitute for a study.
